Homosexuality – taboo in Sami society
Homosexuality is a taboo area and virtually invisible in Sami society, Rigid gender roles, family bonds, religion, traditions, discrimination and prejudices make it difficult to come out as homosexual in Sami communities.
Svenn-Egil Knutsen-Dualljá was the first Sami to marry as a homosexual. In January 2009 he married Bruce Morén- Dualljá.
“I had gathered that homosexuality was associated with sin and shame and if the subject came up I got palpitations of the heart, I trembled and blushed and just had to get away. I was always on guard, and scared of being outed.” (Svenn-Egil Knutsen- Dualljá)
